I do not have a problem with Muslims, but as a British Christian (?) I do have a problem with a religious legal system that permits stoning people to death, amputating thieves' hands, hangings and beheadings being introduced to a predominately non-Islamic country. One only has to look at the chaos and tension created by the presence of two separate legal systems (secular and religious) in Islamic nations such as Pakistan and Indonesia to know that it is neither workable nor desirable in Britain. Muslims living in this country must realise that they have to respect the traditions, customs and conventions of our land and not impose institutions upon us that are contrary to our society, just as non-Muslims are expected to respect the culture of Islamic states like Saudi Arabia. If there some Muslims that find this state of affairs unacceptable, then they should leave Britain for a country more suitable for their tastes as soon as possible.

The Beth Din (Jewish Religious Court)has been operating successfully in the UK for many decades. It most often resolves disputes in the religious community on property and other civil matters.
Despite your views, I do not see anything incompatible with Muslim, Jewish and other religious courts operating alongside the English legal system.

The difference between Halakha and Sharia is that the Jewish community on the whole respects the supremacy of the law of the land in secular matters without trying to undermine what is generally recognise to be a benevolent legal system. Far too many Muslims do not follow this same fine example.
However, Halakha is still open to abuses that are not tolerated by civil law such as a husband's refusal to grant his wife a Get, while he can remarry without impediment.
Good retort C4.
The "Get" situation, I agree, was awful. I believe there has been a recent ruling in English Law making the refusal of a "Get" unlawful. I'll check this out. (I ought to read the JC more often)
